Polio Vaccine Booster Doses

We would like to kindly ask all parents not to call the Surgery or book an appointment about your child's polio vaccines until you are contacted.

Polio Boosters

Following the news that samples of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) have been detected in sewage in some areas of North London, the NHS has begun a campaign to offer a booster of the polio vaccine to eligible children.

We would like to reassure all parents that plans for the polio booster campaign are currently being finalised. We would like to kindly ask all parents not to call the Surgery or book an appointment about your child's polio vaccines until you are contacted to do so.

Children aged 1-9 who are eligible to receive the vaccine will be contacted in the coming weeks. Eligiblity for children aged 1-5 is as below:

  • Children aged between 1 year and 3 years, 3 months will be eligible for an additional dose 4 weeks after their last dose of a polio-containing vaccine.

  • Children aged 3 years, 4 months to 5 years will be eligible for an additional dose 12 months after their last dose of a polio-containing vaccine.

  • Information on children aged 5 and up is to follow in due course.

If your child is eligible for the booster, you will be contacted by SMS text message or by letter.
